CGM is a protein-rich feed that is used as a source of protein, energy and pigments for livestock species including fish.
Corn Gluten Meal (CGM) is a valuable byproduct of the normal corn milling process. It remains after the extraction of the starch and germ and the subsequent separation of the corn bran.
CGM is a protein-rich feed that is used as a source of protein, energy and pigments for livestock species including fish. Furthermore, it has a good proportion of undegradable protein that is essential for high producing ruminants. As with other feedstuffs, CGM must be properly supplemented with the necessary vitamins, minerals and amino acids.
Due to its high protein content, CGM is widely used as an alternative to other plant or animal-based proteins, such as Soybean Meal, Meat and Bone Meal and Fish Meal. CGM is also a valuable source of energy, due to its high gross energy (23.1 MJ/kg DM) coupled with high energy digestibility.
For ruminants, CGM can be a good source of protein and energy. However its low lysine requires careful amount and compound feed ingredient selection (often combined with Soybean Meal) to retain all required proteins.
For pigs CGM is a good source of protein and energy also due to its low fibre content. As with ruminants, the low lysine and tryptophan amounts ideally require supplementing.
For poultry diets CGM not only provides protein and energy, but also strong pigment content producing both golden yellow egg yolks and golden meat. However it is more readily applicable to layer feeds as its low lysine does not make it suitable for broilers without additional amino acid supplements.
CGM's nutrition and palatability for fish has resulted with its inclusion in US fish feeds for decades, often supplemented with Soybean Meal to provide more lysine. Different target fish species require different feed mixes, but all can benefit from substituting amounts of Fish Meal with the lower cost CGM.
A qualified animal nutritionist should be consulted for feed mix ratios for specific target growth stage and animal or fish species.
